Ralf Jacob is a German national who joined the European Commission in 1989 after having studied economics and politics in Hamburg, Paris and London. He became a Head of Unit in 2005 in DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion where he was in charge of analysing demographic, social and employment trends and promoting the modernisation of social protection systems, focussing on the challenges of demographic ageing notably for public and private pensions. In January 2017, he took charge of the unit dealing with retail financial services and payments in the Commission's Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union.
